Thuram returns to training ahead of first winter friendly

The Foals will play their first winter friendly on Saturday, 7th January (14:00 CET), as they host third-tier VfB Oldenburg at the FohlenPlatz at BORUSSIA-PARK. Ahead of the match, Borussia have also been able to welcome World Cup silver medallist Marcus Thuram back to training.

Borussia continued preparing for tomorrow’s friendly with a 90-minute session at BORUSSIA-PARK on Friday morning. Marcus Thuram was back in training for the first time since returning from the World Cup with a silver medal. The Frenchman had returned to Mönchengladbach on Thursday and underwent all the obligatory medical and performances tests following his return.

“Marcus has come back in great shape and is highly motivated. We likely won’t use him tomorrow, though,” said head coach Daniel Farke. Goalkeeper Yann Sommer will also likely not feature in tomorrow’s match against VfB Oldenburg. “Yann prefers to prepare by training for several weeks before playing again. That’s why it’s looking likely that he won’t start,” said Farke. All other players that were away at the World Cup have good chances of featuring against Oldenburg.

“An important friendly for us”

Tomorrow’s friendly will be an important one for every player. “We haven’t played a match in several weeks now, so every minute counts. This is an important friendly for us,” Farke stated. “I’m expecting a good and highly motivated opponent, who have a solid league campaign behind them so far. It will be a good game.” Oldenburg, who were promoted to the 3. Liga ahead of the season, are currently in 16th place with 16 points from 17 games.
