Elvedi wins comfortably with Switzerland, Manu Koné loses with France U21s

Jonas Omlin and Nico Elvedi made a successful start to the European Championship qualifying campaign with the Swiss “Nati”. Manu Koné, however, suffered a clear defeat in a friendly match with the France U21 side.

SWITZERLAND

The Swiss national team secured a comfortable 5-0 (3-0) win over Belarus in Novi Sad, Serbia, to kick off their qualifying campaign for the 2024 European Championship in Germany. While Jonas Omlin spent the evening on the bench, Nico Elvedi played 90 minutes as centre back. The man of the match was Renato Steffen, who scored a hat-trick (4’, 17’, 29’). The other two goals came from former Borussia player Granit Xhaka (62’) and Zeki Amdouni (64’). On Tuesday evening, the Swiss team will host Israel in their second qualifying match.

FRANCE U21S

In preparation for the U21 European Championship in Romania and Georgia at the end of June, Manu Koné suffered a 4-0 (0-0) defeat in England with the France U21 side. Borussia’s midfielder was substituted in the 76th minute with the score at 1-0. Emile Smith Rowe (50’) had given England the lead earlier. Koné had to watch from the bench as the home side went 4-0 up in the closing stages through Noni Madueke (77’), Curtis Jones (79’) and Jacob Ramsey (86’). In the last friendly before the European Championship, the France side will face Spain on Tuesday evening.
