Omlin: "When you’re not having a good day it’s important to at least not concede any goals"

Jonas Omlin talks in interview about his own performance during the 0-0 draw with 1. FC Köln, his first derby experience in a Gladbach shirt and explains what the team can take away from the game.

Jonas, what do you think of the goalless draw in the derby?

Omlin: It was a tough game. We didn’t manage to show on the pitch what we had set out to do. We misplaced the ball too often and in the first half in particular conceded too many chances on goal. In attack we weren’t able to create as many chances as we hoped for. When you’re not having a good day it’s important to at least not concede any goals – and that’s what we managed to do in the end.

Borussia didn’t really manage to get a hold in the game, especially in the first half. Is that how you see it?

Omlin: We struggled to play around Köln and get into spaces where we could then create dangerous chances. Köln did well, held us up well and played cautiously. It was difficult for us to play the way we wanted to.

The clean sheet was also thanks to you. You were able to make some good saves to prevent the team from going behind, like in the 28th minute with the shot from Kingsley Schindler. How do you rate your own performance?

Omlin: Schindler’s shot was slightly deflected, I had to get to it otherwise it would’ve been very annoying if we had gone behind. I think that as a defence we did a really solid job. It’s always a good result for a goalkeeper when you keep a clean sheet.

It was your first derby against Borussia. What did you think of the atmosphere in the stadium?

Omlin: You can see the rivalry between Köln and Borussia. This then also just makes them exciting games. If you can then still have success in these games, then it’s obviously even better. After the international break, I was excited about the derby, I would have liked to have won and been able to celebrate in front of the kurve with the fans. Unfortunately it was not to be.

What lessons can you take with you looking ahead to the upcoming home game at BORUSSIA-PARK against VfL Wolfsburg (Sunday, 15:30 CEST)?

Omlin: At the end of the day, we will take the point with us, no one can take that away from us. Personally, I am pleased with the clean sheet because we’ve conceded too many goals in the last few games. We now want to build upon this point and attack again against Wolfsburg next weekend.
