Elvedi: “I want to help us weather the storm”

Nico Elvedi speaks about his contract extension with Borussia.

Nico, after it had seemed like you were probably going to leave Borussia in pre-season, you’ve now extended your contract. Why have you decided to do this?

Elvedi: I think it’s legitimate to think about going somewhere new after eight years. I told the club that openly. But I’ve always been aware that in the end, it has to work for three sides. In every instance I’ve respected that that didn’t happen, which is also because I still feel very comfortable at Borussia.

Borussia wanted a sign of commitment from you to the club, in the shape of a contract extension.

Elvedi: I can also understand that, and we were in communication the whole time. A contract extension was always an option. We all agreed that we wanted to find a good solution for all involved. What I definitely didn’t want was to leave the club after all these years without Borussia getting a transfer fee.

How do you look back on your time at Borussia?

Elvedi: I owe a lot to Borussia. I’ve had the chance to prove myself in the Bundesliga as an 18-year-old, then to play in Europe’s elite club competitions. During my time here, I’ve developed into an experienced Bundesliga player and a Swiss international, and I’ve done all of this in an environment where I’ve always felt comfortable. I’d like to help lead the team as one of the experienced players after this contract extension, so I can help us to weather this storm.
