#BMGWOB: Match reaction from the Round of 16 victory

After the last minute DFB-Pokal Round of 16 win over VfL Wolfsburg, we have the reactions of goalscorer Manu Koné, assist-maker Florian Neuhaus, captain Julian Weigl and the two head coaches.

Manu Koné: It was a difficult game. The whole team put in a good performance across the whole match. We fought and at the end, we scored the goal and are into the next round. We had luck on our side when it comes to the two chances for Wind just before the end of regulation time. Now, we’re concentrating on the next game at Union Berlin on Saturday.

Florian Neuhaus: Both teams cancelled each other out a bit. Wolfsburg had a very compact back three or back five. It’s sometimes hard to break those down. We also did a lot of defending and luckily, at the end the golden moment came. Nathan played me in brilliantly. I just wanted to get in front of the defender. I managed that, and then I could play the ball to the back post, where Manu arrived brilliantly and just had to head it down.

Julian Weigl: I think this game will give us a boost. It was certainly not our most beautiful and best game, but you could see that there was a team on the pitch who kept on believing until the end. The goal was then created by the lads who’d come on and brought something new to our game. Flo did brilliantly and Manu put it in. The stadium erupted and we held on well. We’re very happy to have gone the full 120 minutes and landed the killer blow at the end.

Head coach Gerardo Seoane: We’re delighted about the win. It was a very tactical game, where we sat deep and kept trying to counter quickly. We defended well for a long time, but over the 120 minutes we did of course concede one or two clear-cut chances. I can say for certain that Wolfsburg had the better chances. But I have to pay my team a huge compliment for how they played with heart and passion. And I also want to thank the fans, who suffered with us and supported us in the right moments.

Head coach Niko Kovac (VfL Wolfsburg): It’s obviously very painful. Football is a beautiful sport and football is also a cruel sport, which we’ve found out. On one side is Gladbach’s joy, and on the other, our sorrow. In the first half, it was a very even and tactical game, in which neither side wanted to make a mistake. We dominated the second half and the extra time period. In the 90th minute, we could have won the game in the same way Gladbach did in the 120th. The team fought brilliantly, worked tirelessly and are unlucky to have been knocked out.
