Wöber and Lainer victorious with Austria

Maximilian Wöber and Stefan Lainer celebrated a friendly victory over Slovakia, while Nico Elvedi’s Switzerland were held to a goalless draw. Fabio Chiarodia and the Italy U19s made it back-to-back wins in European Championship qualification.

Austria

The Austrian national team ran out 2-0 winners against Slovakia in Bratislava. Stefan Lainer marked his international comeback after his recovery from lymph node cancer with a place in the starting XI, before being substituted at half-time. Maximilian Wöber (photo: IMAGO/GEPA pictures/ Johannes Friedl) came on at the break, ensuring that there was Gladbach representation throughout the game. Leipzig’s Christoph Baumgartner scored the fastest international goal in recorded history with a remarkable solo strike after just six seconds, before Andreas Weimann added a second in the 82nd minute to secure victory for Ralf Rangnick’s side.

Switzerland

Nico Elvedi was an unused substitute as Switzerland drew 0-0 with Denmark in Copenhagen. Former Borussia goalkeeper Yann Sommer was taken off due to injury, with current Gladbach stopper Jonas Omlin called up to the squad to replace him.

Italy U19s

The Italian U19 team celebrated a second successive victory in European Championship qualification, securing a 2-1 win over Czechia. Borussia’s Fabio Chiarodia played the full 90 minutes for his team.
