Austria lose despite a Lainer assist

Borussia’s right-back Stefan Lainer played the full 90 minutes in Austria’s 3-2 loss to Romania, providing the assist that made it 1-1. Hannes Wolf will face England tonight with Austria’s U21s (20:45).

Austria and Stefan Lainer lost their first home game of the new UEFA Nations League campaign 3-2 to Romania. Denis Alibec put the visitors ahead after just three minutes in Klagenfurt. Lainer’s registered an assist with a header to Christoph Baumgartner for the equaliser (17’), however Romania regained the lead in the second half through Dragoş Grigore (51’) and Alexandru Maxim (70’). Austria got themselves back into the game with a goal from Karim Onisiwo (81’), but they ran out of time searching for an equaliser. Austria did win their first game of the Nations League vs. Norway on Friday. Lainer also played the full 90 minutes in Oslo.

Hannes Wolf and Austria U21s will face England in Ried this evening in an U21 Euro qualifier (20:45 CEST). Austria’s first competitive game in 2020 went badly, as they lost 5-1 to Albania last Friday, although Wolf did score from the spot on his return to the national side after a long spell on the sidelines. England U21s will travel to Austria full on confidence after they won 6-0 against Kosovo on Friday and they still have a 100% record in the group.
