Facts and stats ahead of #BMGFCU

Everything to know ahead of the Foals’ first home game of 2020/21 against 1. FC Union Berlin on Saturday (15:30 CEST).

Spectators:

  • Before the 2020/21 Bundesliga season got underway, Germany’s 16 states agreed to a uniform set of rules governing the return of fans to stadiums. Over the course of a six-week trial period, stadiums will be permitted to open at 20 per cent of their total capacity. This means that BORUSSIA-PARK will be permitted to allow 10,804 fans to attend Borussia’s home games until the end of October.

Head-to-head record:

  • This will be the third ever Bundesliga meeting between the sides.
  • Last season, newly-promoted Union won 2-0 at home at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei. The Foals won the reverse fixture 4-1.
  • The two sides have also met once in the DFB-Pokal. In the 2000/01 semi-finals, the Foals lost 4-2 (2-2 a.e.t.) in a penalty shootout against Union, who were in the Regionalliga (third division at the time) back then.

Statistics – provided by UNIBET:

  • Borussia won all of their last three home games last season: 4-1 against Union, 3-0 against Wolfsburg and 2-1 against Hertha.
  • The Foals suffered just three home defeats in the Bundesliga in 2019/20 (against Dortmund, Leipzig and Leverkusen). They were the second-best team in the league’s home form table (38 points), after Bayern (41).
  • Since the introduction of the three-points-per-win rule, Borussia have only once taken more points at home than they did last season (2015/16 – 40).
  • After having won all four of their previous opening day Bundesliga matches, the Foals lost in Dortmund on matchday 1 last weekend. It was the first time in five years that Borussia started the season with a loss, with their most recent defeat on opening day also coming in Dortmund.
  • The 3-0 defeat in Dortmund was the Foals’ heaviest defeat to date under Marco Rose.
  • Yann Sommer is on the cusp of his 200th Bundesliga game for the Foals.
  • Union Berlin picked up just 14 of their 41 points last season away from home.
  • Urs Fischer’s side have lost four of their last five Bundesliga away games, including a  4-1 defeat to Gladbach on matchday 29 last season.
