The Foals began the 2020/21 season on 12th September, and Marco Rose’s side played three competitive games in the month. Patrick Herrmann, Stefan Lainer and Marcus Thuram each have one Man of the Match award. The season began with the first round of the DFB-Pokal against fourth-division side FC Oberneuland, with Borussia winning 8-0 and Patrick Herrmann, who scored a brace, getting Man of the Match. Stefan Lainer was voted Man of the Match after the Foals’ opening Bundesliga fixture – a 3-0 loss at Borussia Dortmund. The first home game of the new season last Saturday saw Borussia draw with Union Berlin (1-1), as Marcus Thuram was named Man of the Match.

Patrick Herrmann: After beating FC Oberneuland in the DFB-Pokal, he won more than 60% of the vote for Man of the Match. The 29-year-old played as a striker, an unfamiliar position for him, but secured the victory early in the game: he scored two goals in less than 120 seconds (12’, 13’). “It’s always great to score as a forward,” said Herrmann. “I had only scored one goal in the DFB-Pokal before today, but getting two more is good and gives me confidence for the next few games.”

Stefan Lainer: The voting for the Man of the Match after the Bundesliga opener against Borussia Dortmund (3-0) was a close affair. Right-back Stefan Lainer won the vote, however, with about 18%, closely followed by Ramy Bensebaini with 16% of the vote. Lainer was solid in defence and tried, together with new signing Hannes Wolf, to exert pressure down the right-hand side. The Austrian looked most threatening in attack shortly before the break, when he cut in from the right and fired a shot on the Dortmund goal.

Marcus Thuram: After a long break due to injury and short appearances in the first two games of the season, the Frenchman was back in the starting line-up for the first home game against Union Berlin (1-1). It was a strong performance from the start, and he scored the opener for the Foals in the 56th minute. Hofmann swung a corner into the box from the left-hand side and Thuram leaped up and headed the ball home from five metres. The fans recognised the attacker’s performance and made him Man of the Match with 49% of the vote.
