Important games for the Foals in the Nations League

Matthias Ginter, Florian Neuhaus and Jonas Hofmann will be in action tomorrow (Saturday, 20:45 CEST) for the Germany national side in Ukraine. Yann Sommer and Nico Elvedi will be looking to win valuable points in the UEFA Nations League in Spain at the same time.

Germany

The Germany national squad, made up of 23 players including Foals Matthias Ginter, Florian Neuhaus and Jonas Hofmann, travel to Ukraine today (Friday). Ukraine will host Germany on Saturday evening (20:45 CEST) in the capital Kiev in a UEFA Nations League fixture. “We really want to win the game and we know what we need to do,” says Hofmann, who, like Neuhaus, made his debut for his country in the 3-3 friendly draw with Turkey. “It’s also the case that winning is more fun and allows you to relax and play your natural game. I think the mood in camp is positive and motivated, and all the boys are ambitious, but it’s logical that it would help us if we got some reward for our efforts.” Germany are currently third in Group 4 of League A after draws against Spain and Switzerland (both 1-1).

Switzerland

Switzerland are behind Germany in fourth place in Group 4 of League A. Yann Sommer and Nico Elvedi’s side face Spain in the Alfredo Di Stéfano Stadium on Saturday (20:45 CEST). The Swiss lost their first game of the group stage 2-1 in Ukraine before drawing 1-1 with Germany. Vladimir Petkovic’s men were beaten 2-1 by Croatia in a friendly on Wednesday. Sommer and Elvedi didn’t feature in that game, but each can be hopeful of making an appearance against Spain in the UEFA Nations League.

Algeria

Ramy Bensebaini and the Algeria national side face Nigeria in a friendly tonight (Friday, 20:30 CEST) in Sankt Veit an der Glan in Austria. Borussia’s left-back could make his 31st appearance for his country.

Austria U21s

In their quest to qualify for the 2021 UEFA European U21 Championship in Hungary and Slovenia (24th – 31st March), Austria and Hannes Wolf face Kosovo in the Fadil Vokrri Stadium in Pristina tonight (Friday, 19:00 CEST). Wolf could make his 13th appearance for Austria U21s. Austria are second in Group 3 with twelve points from seven games going into the game, only behind England with 19 points. They will have to be one of the five best group runners-up to qualify for the European Championship. Kosovo are in fifth place in the group with six points from six games. Werner Gregoritsch’s Austria side won the reverse fixture 4-0 at home. After their match in Kosovo, Austria face Turkey (13th November in Samsun) and Andorra (17th November in Ried).

Germany U19s

Luiz Skraback was in line to make his debut for Germany U19s yesterday (Thursday) after being selected in Christian Wörn’s 26-man squad. Germany were meant to face France twice during a nine-day training camp in Velbert, but the fixtures were cancelled at short notice in agreement with the local authorities. This was due to a Coronavirus infection in the French squad that was detected in the second round of testing. There were no positive cases in the Germany squad in either the first or second round of testing. The two squads have had no contact to this point.
