No winner as Foals face off in Cologne

Foals faced off in the UEFA Nations League match between Germany, with Matthias Ginter, and Switzerland, with Yann Sommer and Nico Elvedi, but there was no winner. Ramy Bensebaini made an assist for Algeria.

It was a rollercoaster of a game when Germany met Switzerland last night in Cologne. Sommer and Elvedi, as expected, started the game for Switzerland, and they took a two-goal lead through Marco Gavranovic (5’) and Remo Freuler (26’). Matthias Ginter started for Germany and Timo Werner (28’) and Kai Havertz (55’) brought them level. That didn’t last, as Gavranovic put the Swiss back in front (57’), but Serge Gnabry scored the final goal of the game and made it 3-3 just three minutes later (60’). Ginter was substituted in the 77th minute, whilst the Swiss Foals played the whole game. Neither Florian Neuhaus nor Jonas Hofmann made an appearance.

“When you lead the game three times, you should win. We played well in the first half and we forced Germany into making mistakes. We were clinical in attack too. But then we made mistakes of our own, and Germany took advantage,” said Sommer. Switzerland remain in last place in the table with two points, whilst Germany are second with the same number of points as Ukraine (6). Spain lead the group (7). The group standings will be decided with the last round of fixtures in the middle of November.

Bensebaini gets an assist

Ramy Bensebaini and Algeria drew 2-2 with Mexico in a friendly. Borussia’s left-back played the entire game. He scored the only goal of the game in the sixth minute of Algeria’s previous match against Nigeria, and this time he recorded an assist. He passed the ball to Riyad Mahrez from the left in the 67th minute who scored to give the Algerians a 2-1 lead. Mexico had scored the first goal of the game through Jesus Corona (43’), but Isamel Bennacer equalised (45’). Mexico got a late equaliser through Diego Lainez (86’).
