Borussia extend captain Lars Stindl's contract

Lars Stindl signed a new contract on Friday that will keep him at Borussia for two more years.

Borussia Mönchengladbach have extended the contract of club captain Lars Stindl, which was originally due to expire at the end of the season. The deal ensures the 32-year-old will remain with the Foals for two more years until 2023. “We’re delighted that Lars has committed the next two years to Borussia. He is a top performer, a leader, and the head of our team,” said Borussia’s sporting director Max Eberl.

Stindl joined Borussia in 2015 from Hannover 96 and has made 190 appearances for the Foals, scoring 61 goals. In his first season, he scored 14 goals and assisted 15 more in 39 games for Borussia, followed by 18 goals and nine assists in 44 games in his second season at VfL. The 2016/17 season saw Stindl involved in eleven goals in 34 matches, including the legendary hattrick against Fiorentina in the UEFA Europa League.

Two serious injuries kept the attacker sidelined for periods spanning several months across the next two seasons, but Sindl returned stronger on both occasions. Last season, the Foals’ captain scored 14 goals and provided six assists in 54 games. The current campaign has seen the 32-year-old return to top form, having already netted nine goals and assisted six in 19 matches in 2020/21. Most recently, Stindl scored his second hattrick in a Borussia shirt against Eintracht Frankfurt in the 3-3 draw in Hesse.
