Borussia extends contracts of Schippers and Eberl

Borussia have extended the contracts of chief executive Stephan Schippers and sporting director Max Eberl until 2026.

"We are very pleased that we can tackle the challenges of the next few years with our two operational managers, Stephan Schippers and Max Eberl," said Borussia's president Rolf Königs. "We are at the end of an unusual year in which the Corona pandemic turned many things on their head, not only at Borussia Mönchengladbach. For us, 2020 was a major sporting and economic challenge and we have to assume that this will also be the case for 2021, which lies ahead of us. Through their work, Max Eberl and Stephan Schippers have been a significant part of the successful and sustainable journey that Borussia has taken in recent years. Both have been with Borussia for more than 20 years. Continuity is important to us and is a cornerstone for what has been created at Borussia Mönchengladbach and at BORUSSIA-PARK in recent years.”

Eberl had his first official day of work at Borussia on 11th January 1999, when he joined the club as a 25-year-old right-back from SpVgg Greuther Fürth. In June 1999, Gladbach were relegated from the Bundesliga for the first time, but returned in 2001 with Eberl part of the promotion-winning side. Eberl went on to make 146 competitive appearances for the club until 2004, before becoming youth co-ordinator following his retirement, a post he held until 2008. In October 2008, Eberl became responsible for the sporting direction of the club and has been in his current role of sporting director since 2010.

Stephan Schippers was born in Mönchengladbach and studied business administration, going on to become a tax consultant. After working in tax consultancy and auditing, the business graduate joined Borussia in March 1999, becoming managing director of Borussia VfL 1900 Mönchengladbach GmbH. Since 2010, he has been a member of the supervisory board of DFL Deutsche Fußball Liga GmbH and the supervisory board of DFL Digital Sports. He is also a member of the DFB Executive Board, a member of the DFL Finance Commission and a DFB representative for the 3.Liga and Regionalliga.
