Thuram banned for six games

After his red card in the last Bundesliga game against TSG Hoffenheim, Marcus Thuram has been banned for six competitive matches (one of which will be deferred) and fined €40,000 by the DFB’s sport tribunal.

The DFB has released the following statement regarding the suspension: “The German Football Association’s (DFB) sport tribunal has handed Marcus Thuram of Bundesliga side Borussia Mönchengladbach a six-match ban and €40,000 fine, following an indictment by the DFB control committee for assaulting an opponent in a breach of sporting regulations. Five of the six matches are to be served directly in Bundesliga and cup games, with the sixth suspended until 21st December 2021.

Thuram was sent off by referee Frank Willenborg (Osnabrück) in the 78th minute of the Bundesliga match between Mönchengladbach and TSG Hoffenheim on 19th December 2020 after spitting in the face of opponent Stefan Posch from close range.”

Borussia have accepted the verdict, meaning that the ban will now come into force. The Frenchman will miss tomorrow evening’s DFB-Pokal match against SV Elversberg as well as the upcoming Bundesliga matches against Arminia Bielefeld (2nd January), Bayern Munich (8th January), VfB Stuttgart (16th January) and Werder Bremen (19th January). Thuram was already disciplined by Borussia on Sunday; the club has fined him one month’s wages, which will be given towards a good social cause.
