Sommer: "A point is fair"

Yann Sommer discusses the 1-1 draw away at Union Berlin. His thoughts on…

…the point gained at Union: We played a good game and overall can be fairly satisfied with the draw. It was a really difficult match against a tough opponent. They defended really well and gave us little space, which made things difficult for us in the final third. With one exception, we failed to take the chances we did have. Overall, 1-1 is a fair result.

…Union’s goal: Union are a huge threat from set pieces with their big defenders. There’s a reason they’ve scored so many goals from free kicks and corners – it’s a big strength of theirs. We were prepared for that, but it’s still not easy to defend in these situations. But that doesn’t excuse two players standing unmarked. We simply weren’t focused enough. We can definitely defend that better.

…Alassane Plea’s equaliser: Lasso proved his class and ability once again scored a really important goal for us. I know from my own experience that you shouldn’t be letting him get a shot off from that distance. He has a strong shot and lucky for us he was able to use it to save an important point for us.

…the busy upcoming schedule: The double, triple load over a long period definitely drains a lot of energy from you. And that was definitely a reason why we weren’t able to finish off some of our games during the Hinrunde. But I’m convinced that we’ve learned from that. We’re not complaining about all the games because that‘s exactly how we want it. So, we’re looking forward to all the midweek games.

…the next matches: We have four games in the next two weeks. But we’re not thinking about the games in the future, we tend to take things one game at a time. The next one for us is VfB Stuttgart in the DFB-Pokal. We will need a good performance there to reach the quarter final. But that’s our goal, as we want to go as far as possible in the DFB-Pokal this season.
