Borussia to host BVB in the DFB-Pokal quarter-finals

The Foals have drawn Borussia Dortmund at home in the quarter-finals of the DFB-Pokal. The draw took place on Sunday evening on ARD-Sportschau, with the last 8 fixtures to be played on the 2nd and 3rd March 2021.

Round-the-world yachtsman Boris Herrmann and national team director Oliver Bierhoff made the draw on Sunday evening, with VfL’s tie against last season’s Bundesliga runners-up at BORUSSIA-PARK the first to be made. The matches will be played on 2nd and 3rd March, with two kick-off times on both days (18:30 and 20:30). Exact timings are usually confirmed ten to twelve days after the draw.

“It's an explosive draw that already sounds like it could be the final. We are very happy to have been drawn at home. After all, we have shown recently that we are capable of beating Dortmund at BORUSSIA-PARK,” commented sporting director Max Eberl, alluding to the most recent meeting between the sides that Gladbach won 4-2. “It could have been easier, there's no doubt about that. But we'll take it as it comes and look forward to a great evening of football,” said Christoph Kramer.

The Foals journey to the quarter-finals has come with convincing victories over Regionalliga sides FC Oberneuland (8-0) and SV Elsversberg (5-0), along with a 2-1 win over fellow Bundesliga side VfB Stuttgart. BVB, who are currently level on points with VfL, beat Bundesliga 2 side MSV Duisburg 5-0 followed by a 2-0 win over Eintracht Braunschweig. Extra time was needed to defeat SC Paderborn 3-2, which ensured Dortmund’s passage into the last 8.

This is the fourth meeting between Dortmund and the Foals in the DFB-Pokal. The head-to-head record leans towards VfL, who won both times the tie was held in Mönchengladbach with a 6-1 win in the second round in 1987 followed by a 2-1 win in 2004, also in the second round. The most recent meeting went the way of the visitors however, with BVB coming away 2-1 winners in the second round of last season’s cup.

Following the semi-finals of the DFB-Pokal on 1st and 2nd May, the final will take place in the Olympiastadion in Berlin on the 13th May.
