Sommer: “Nice to see the boys smiling on the pitch again”

Following the 5-0 victory over Arminia Bielefeld on Sunday evening, goalkeeper Yann Sommer sat down to discuss the win, the race for European places, and the upcoming quarantine training camp.

Yann Sommer on…

…the importance of the victory: It was a perfect day. We’re delighted that we’ve been able to bounce back from the 3-2 defeat against TSG Hoffenheim. We put in a great performance and made it very difficult for Bielefeld to put us under any pressure. I thought we played really well in every department. As a team, we brought a lot of energy onto the pitch and showed very positive body language alongside quality on the ball and good positional play. Defensively, we stayed very compact and we were aggressive in our duels. We want to keep fighting for European football next season and we really showed that in the way we played.

…Breel Embolo’s brace: I’m really happy for Breel. He delivered a great performance and topped it off with two goals. I’m happy for all of the boys in the team, but I think it’s clear that the brace will have done Breel a lot of good.

…the discrepancy between the Foals’ last two matches: It’s been something of a recurring theme this season that we blow hot and cold. It’s difficult to explain. In Sinsheim we didn’t play well at all so it was extra important that we were able to show ourselves what we’re capable of. We all enjoyed the game against Arminia a great deal and it was nice to see the boys smiling on the pitch again.

…Borussia’s chances in the race for European football: We know that we cannot allow ourselves to make any more mistakes this season. The door to the European places is still open at the moment and we will do everything we can to catch up with the teams ahead of us. If we can continue to win games like we did against Bielefeld, the pressure is on other teams, as we’re closing the gap. I want to achieve everything possible with Borussia this season.

…the upcoming quarantine training camp: It’s not something I’m looking forward to if I’m being completely honest. But it’s something that is necessary and it makes sense. We accept the decision to go ahead with it and we’ll make the best of it. It’s not for long and the most important thing is that we can bring the season to a close properly.

Yann Sommer was delighted with the Foals’ performance against Bielefeld.
