Player of the Season: Tobias Sippel and Oscar Wendt in focus

Patrick Herrmann, Jonas Hofmann, Florian Neuhaus, Lars Stindl, Nico Elvedi, Ramy Bensebaini, Tobias Sippel and Oscar Wendt are in the running for player of the season - presented by Cichon Personalmanagement. Rounding off our overview of each nominee, we look back at Tobias Sippel and Oscar Wendt's 2020/21 season.

Since joining the club from 1. FC Kasierslautern, Tobias Sippel has been a reliable replacement for Yann Sommer. To date, the goalkeeper has stood in between the posts for the Foals on 17 occasions, with just under half of these appearances coming this season.

Head coach Marco Rose decided that Sippel would be number one in the DFB-Pokal, and his faith in the 33-year-old was repaid, the goalkeeper delivering secure performances as Borussia reached the quarterfinals with victories over FC Oberneuland (8-0), SV Elversberg (5-0) and VfB Stuttgart (2-1). Sippel was impressive once again in the quarter-final tie but was was unable to prevent the team falling to a narrow 1-0 defeat against Borussia Dortmund.

Sippel also made four appearances in the Bundesliga last season. His first league appearance of the campaign came in the 1-1 draw against Hertha BSC in the first half of the season. The goalkeeper came off the bench in the 17th minute after Yann Sommer received a red card. In the following games, the 33-year-old proved to be a reliable replacement for the suspended Sommer in the following games, a 4-0 win against Eintracht Frankfurt and a 3-2 defeat to TSG Hoffenheim and was subsequently voted by the fans as April's Player of the Month.

Wendt bows out after ten years

After showing ten years of loyalty to Borussia, there was no doubt that Oscar Wendt should be named Borussia's Player of the Month for May after making his last appearance for the club. Therefore, there was no voting for the award and the club named the left back as the winner. After a total of 305 games, which included an impressive 19 goals for a full back, Wendt bid his farewells to Borussia. He leaves the club with his name in the history books, holding the record for the most appearances made by a non-German player. "It was a wonderful time for me. I love Borussia," said Wendt, who will now return to IFK Gothenburg in his native Sweden.

In his final season for Borussia, Wendt played 29 competitive games, scoring two goals. Across three competitions, the Swede shared the left-back position with Ramy Bensebaini. Wendt was called upon particularly during November and December, when his teammate was unavailable with Coronavirus. It was during this period that Wendt scored what proved to be his final goal for the Foals, scoring Borussia's second goal in the 4-1 win over Schalke 04. Just a few days previously, Wendt has also been among the goals, this time in the UEFA Champions League, scoring the final goal of the game in the 77th minute of the 4-0 victory over Shakhtar Donetsk.

You can vote for your Player of the Season from the eight candidates available in the FohlenApp until midnight on Sunday.
