Ten Borussia players in the EURO 2020 knockout stages

Eleven players from Borussia Mönchengladbach started the UEFA EURO 2020 tournament, which was delayed by a full calendar year to June 2021. The group stages are behind us and ten Foals remain in contention. Who are they up against? When are they playing? Your overview:

Switzerland

The biggest Borussia contingent present at the tournament is in the Switzerland squad, as it has been for several years. Yann Sommer, Nico Elvedi, Denis Zakaria and Breel Embolo were all called up. In Group A, Switzerland picked up four points against Wales, Italy and Turkey, progressing to the knockouts as one of the best four third-placed teams.

  • Wales 1-1 Switzerland, Baku
  • Italy 3-0 Switzerland, Rome
  • Switzerland 3-1 Turkey, Baku
  • Last 16: Monday, 28 June (21:00 CEST in Bucharest): France vs. Switzerland

Austria

Two Foals are going into the last 16 with Austria: Stefan Lainer and Valentino Lazaro (returning to Inter this summer), finished second in Group C with Netherlands (group winners), the Ukraine (through in third) and North-Macedonia. Lainer and Co. will take on Italy for a place in the quarterfinals.

  • Austria 3-1 North Macedonia, Bucharest
  • Netherlands 2-0 Austria, Amsterdam
  • Ukraine 0-1 Austria, Bucharest

Slovakia

László Bénes, who has spent the last six months on loan at FC Augsburg, was in Slovakia’s national team squad for the EUROS. Up against Spain, Poland and Sweden in Group E, Slovakia finished third with three points, but did not qualify for the knockout stages.

  • Poland 1-2 Slovakia, St. Petersburg
  • Sweden 1-0 Slovakia, St. Petersburg
  • Slovakia 0-5 Spain, Seville

Germany

Matthias Ginter, Jonas Hofmann and Florian Neuhaus are all part of Germany’s national team, who were able to survive the ‘Group of Death’ with France, Portugal and Hungary. Our three Foals finished the group in second place and are going to Wembley.

  • Portugal 2-4 Germany, Munich
  • Germany 2-2 Hungary, Munich
  • Last 16: Tuesday, 29th June (18:00 CEST in London): England vs. Germany
