Switzerland keep hopes of reaching round of 16 alive

Yann Sommer, Nico Elvedi, Denis Zakaria and Breel Embolo ended the group stage of the UEFA EURO 2020 with a 3-1 win over Turkey, while Wales lost 1-0 to Italy in the other Group A match. Switzerland finished in third place, and still have a chance of qualifying for the round of 16.

Borussia's quartet of Swiss Foals will be hoping for other results to go their way in order to reach the round of 16. Switzerland ended the group stage of the UEFA EURO 2020 in third place in Group A with four points. The two top teams from each group automatically qualify for the round of 16, with the top four third-placed sides joining them in the next round. Whether or not Switzerland's four points will be enough to see their EURO campaign continue will depend on results from the other groups.

Switzerland finished third behind Italy (9 points) and Wales (also 4 points) on goal difference. The Swiss had drawn their opening group stage match against Wales (1-1), meaning the head-to-head record between the sides is balanced. Head coach Vladimir Petković's team then followed up with a 3-0 defeat to Italy.

On Sunday evening (20th June), Sommer and Co. celebrated a 3-1 win over Turkey, while Wales fell to a 1-0 defeat against Italy. Sommer, Elvedi and Embolo all started for Switzerland, who took an early lead through Haris Seferovic (6'). Xherdan Shaqiri then made it 2-0 in the 26th minute, before Irfan Can Kahveci cut the defict after the break (62'). Shaqiri then scored a second (68') to put Switzerland on course for a 3-1 win. Denis Zakaria was an unused substitute.
