New signing Joe Scally looking to prove himself

Joseph 'Joe' Scally has officially been a Foal since 1st January 2021. During the second half of last season, he played for Borussia U23s in the Regionalliga. Now, he's taking part in pre-season with the first team squad and is looking to prove himself.

"As a kid, everyone dreams of playing football in Europe, in one of the Top 5 leagues. Being able to play in Germany is a dream and I couldn't be happier about it. I'm very glad to be here and take on this new challenge," Scally said upon his arrival in January. The 18-year-old has been in Mönchengladbach for almost six months now, after having signed from New York City FC in November 2019. Since then, Scally has managed to settle in well in his new surroundings.

Scally has been training regularly with the Borusia first team, but is yet to feature in a competitive game for the side. Instead, the defender has been playing for the U23s in the Regionalliga West. "Joe has been able to fit in quickly at Borussia. He's really gone from 0 to 100. I have never seen a young player that goes into challenges as hard as he does, while not being nasty. He's very aggressive, athletic and in great shape. He's also a strong player. He made his debut for the U23s when the team was going through a tough time and impressed over time," said Roland Virkus, the director of Borussia's academy.

Pre-season training began last Saturday for Borussia's first team, with Scally taking part. He will be looking to prove himself to new head coach Adi Hütter in order to fulfil a childhood dream of making his Bundesliga debut.
