Borussia loan Nicolas out to Vicitoria Köln

Gladbach loan goalkeeper Moritz Nicolas to third-tier side Viktoria Köln. The 23 year old has already had loan spells at Union Berlin and VfL Osnabrück.

Borussia are sending goalkeeper Moritz Nicolas on a year-long loan to third-tier team Viktoria Köln. The 23 year old, who is under contract at Gladbach until 2023, has played on loan at Union Berlin at VfL Osnabrück in the past two years. He made one competitive appearance for Union Berlin in the 2019/20 season and one for VfL Osnabrück in 2020/21. “Moritz has unfortunately not had enough game time over the past two years. As he is an important part of our future plans, we decided to give him another loan spell. In this case to Viktoria Köln, where he will have more time on the pitch,” says sporting director Max Eberl.

Nicolas moved from RW Essen to Mönchengladbach in 2015. He made 75 appearances for Borussia’s U23 team in the German fourth tier as well as being named in five 18-man matchday squads for the first team. Since the competition in Yann Sommer and Tobias Sippel was so great, Gladbach loaned the keeper out. At Union Berlin, he was present in the 20-man matchday squad for all except two fixtures, however he only made an appearance in the final away game against TSG Hoffenheim (4-0 loss). He was also in the squad for all 34 of VfL Osnabrück’s Bundesliga 2 fixtures last season, but only took to the field on matchday 23 in the away game against SV Sandhausen (3-0 loss).

Goalkeeper Moritz Nicola played in the second half of Saturday's friendly against Viktoria Köln (2-2).
