Borussia trio part of Germany squad as they secure World Cup qualification

The Germany national team sealed qualification for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar with two games to spare following a 4-0 victory over North Macedonia in Skopje. Jonas Hofmann and Florian Neuhaus were substituted on late in the game whilst Matthias Ginter was an unused substitute.

Germany have already confirmed their place at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar thanks to a 4-0 win against North Macedonia. This puts Hansi Flick’s side on an unassailable 21 points in qualifying group J which puts them at the top of the table. Romania are currently in second place in the group with 13 points after eight qualifying matches. North Macedonia (3rd place) and Armenia (4th) both have 12 points, Iceland find themselves in fifth place with eight points and Liechtenstein are bottom of the group with just one point. “We have officially qualified, which is exactly what we wanted to do,” commented national team head coach Flick.

The 56-year-old did not include Matthias Ginter, Jonas Hofmann (photo: imago images/ Nordphoto) or Florian Neuhaus in his starting XI. Hofmann replaced Serge Gnabry in the 74th minute of the game with the score at 3-0 after goals from Kai Havertz (50’) and a Timo Werner brace (70’ and 73’). Neuhaus was introduced shortly afterwards (80’) before Jamal Musiala scored the final goal of the game (84’). Matthias Ginter watched the entire game from the bench.

“You have to credit the team for the attitude they showed during the game. The first half was a little hectic, and the team was lacking in precision just like against Romania. We upped it after scoring the first goal and we were consistent, so we can be content with that,” summarised Flick. Germany will play their remaining qualifying matches during the next international break in November. They face Liechtenstein in Wolfsburg on Thursday 11th November (20:45 CET) before travelling to play Armenia on Sunday 14th November (18:00 CET).

More Foals are in action for their national teams on Tuesday evening before the international break draws to a close.
