All the facts after Gladbach’s historic win over FC Bayern

The 5-0 win over FC Bayern in the DFB-Pokal will go into the club’s history books. We’ve summarised the most important stats and facts after this historic night at BORUSSIA-PARK.

From a Gladbach perspective:

  • This was the Foals’ first win over FC Bayern in the DFB-Pokal at the eighth time of asking.
  • Borussia equalled their biggest ever win over FC Bayern, having also thrashed them 5-0 on 18th May 1974 in the Bundesliga.
  • This 5-0 victory was the biggest win in the DFB-Pokal at BORUSSIA-PARK (the 8-0 defeat of FC Oberneuland in the first round in 2020 was officially played as an away game after the tie was switched to Mönchengladbach due to the pandemic).
  • Gladbach enjoyed their biggest DFB-Pokal win at home since 1987. Back then, they hammered Bayer Uerdingen 9-2 in the quarterfinals.
  • Breel Embolo became the 13th Gladbach player to score a brace against Bayern. Of the current squad, Patrick Herrmann (2011/12), Ramy Bensebaini (2019/20) and Jonas Hofmann (2020/21) have all bagged twice in one match versus the record cup winners.
  • Ramy Bensebaini is just the second Borussia player to score twice in at least two games against FC Bayern (after Jupp Heynckes).
  • Borussia have now beaten Bayern nine times in all competitions since 2011 (23 meetings) – something only Dortmund have also managed during this period (11 wins from 36 games).
  • The Foals are now unbeaten in four home games against FC Bayern (W3, D1), a longer run than any other German side can currently boast.

From a Bayern perspective:

  • This was Bayern’s heaviest ever DFB-Pokal defeat (previous record was a 5-1 loss at Köln in 1972).
  • Bayern last suffered a heavier defeat 43 years ago (7-1 at Düsseldorf on 9th December 1978).
  • FCB were 3-0 down after 21 minutes – the earliest they had ever been three goals behind in a DFB-Pokal match.
  • In the post-war era, Bayern had only previously conceded five goals in just two Pokal matches (5-1 vs. Köln in 1972 and 5-2 to Dortmund in 2012).
  • Gladbach ended Bayern’s run of at least one goal in each of their last 85 competitive games. This streak began after a 0-0 draw against Leipzig on 9th February 2020.
  • Bayern last lost without scoring in August 2019 at Dortmund in the Supercup (2-0).
