Elvedi and Embolo out for the coming weeks

Borussia’s fears are confirmed: Nico Elvedi and Breel Embolo will both be out of action in the coming weeks after suffering injuries in yesterday’s 1-1 draw in Mainz.

The Foals have been hit with the news that Nico Elvedi has suffered a ligament injury to his foot and Breel Embolo has picked up a hamstring injury. Both will miss Switzerland’s upcoming World Cup qualifiers and Borussia will be without the centre-back and the attacker for their next fixtures.

Both players had to be replaced just two minutes apart in the first half yesterday. Elvedi made contact with Karim Onisiwo’s trailing leg as the Mainz striker latched onto a through ball, immediately feeling pain in his ankle. After receiving treatment, the defender attempted to continue but had to be replaced a short time later. Just seconds after Elvedi came off, Embolo injured his right thigh after overextending to reach the ball and also had to be taken off.

Alongside Elvedi and Embolo, Borussia are also missing Jordan Beyer (thigh), Tony Jantschke (face), Christoph Kramer (hamstring), Stefan Lainer (recovering from a broken ankle) and Mamadou Doucouré (recovering after rupturing his Achilles tendon). “Unfortunately we are being plagued by injuries at the moment,” said head coach Adi Hütter.

Breel Embolo had to be taken off after 30 minutes.
