Bensebaini and Algeria out of AFCON

Borussia full back Ramy Bensebaini and the Algeria national team have been eliminated from the Africa Cup of Nations after the group stage. “Les Verts” were defeated 3-1 in their final game.

The holders are out: Ramy Bensebaini and Algeria have fallen at the first hurdle in their quest to defend the Africa Cup of Nations title in Cameroon. After a 0-0 draw against Sierra Leone to kick off their campaign, Algeria were then defeated 1-0 by Equatorial Guinea and were eliminated after taking 1 point from three games in Group E.

One win would have been enough for the north African side to progress, but goals from Franck Kessie (23’), Ibrahim Sangare (39’) and Nicolas Pepe (54’) saw Ivory Coast take a comfortable lead before Sofiane Bendebka pulled one back in the 73rd minute.

Therefore, the Foals will only be without Bensebaini for one more game – this weekend’s Bundesliga fixture against Union Berlin on Saturday (15:30 CET). The full back will be back in contention for Borussia’s away trip to Arminia Bielefeld on Saturday 5th February (15:30 CET).
