“A step in the right direction” – #DSCBMG reaction

We heard from the players and coaches after Borussia’s 1-1 draw with Arminia Bielefeld on Saturday afternoon.

Yann Sommer: It was a well-fought, intense and physical game. We wanted to put in a good performance, be brave and implement the coach’s ideas. We managed that at times, even though we gave away two or three dangerous counterattacks, but that can happen. It was a well-balanced first half. There were a few attacks after the break that we ought to have made more of and then we could have created some clear-cut chances. All in all, it was a step in the right direction. We can build on the point going into the next game. It will be a real fight against Augsburg, one we’ll be ready for. The Bundesliga is hard-fought – we need to battle through and really dig deep to pick up points.

Jonas Hofmann: It’s only normal for us to miss Max Eberl and think about him, but we have to draw a line under the issue, as Max has now left the club. It’s a fact we have to accept and now we need to focus on ourselves and the club. We as a team were the ones out on the pitch today with the job of getting back on the road to success. We didn’t manage to get the win, but the point and the way we played are certainly the right response.

Adi Hütter: It was a deserved point that we will happily take. If we had been more clinical with our counterattacks, we probably could have got the win today. It wasn’t nice going behind, but the team fought their way back into the game brilliantly. We went for the win in the closing stages, but we couldn’t quite get that second goal. Nevertheless, a lot of players were at a good level today, even if our confidence levels aren’t quite where they could be. Yann Sommer had another good performance, our defence was solid, the midfield worked hard, and we had some good ideas in attack. Overall, I think it was a good team performance.

Arminia Bielefeld head coach Frank Kramer: It was a game that had everything for the neutral. We put in a passionate performance and played with a high tempo. Neither side gave anything anyway – it was a real back and forth. The lads left their heart out on the pitch and deserve the point. We’re happy with the result and will gladly take a point – we can be proud of that.
