Ginter joins SC Freiburg

Matthias Ginter will leave Borussia after five years and return to his hometown club SC Freiburg.

At the start of the new season, Matthias Ginter will leave Borussia on a free transfer to join DFB-Pokal finalists SC Freiburg when his current contract expires on 30th June. “I wanted to do another special thing in my career and for me, nothing is more special than returning home and going back to SC Freiburg,” said the defender, who joined Freiburg at U13 level and made his professional debut with the club as an 18-year-old in 2012.

After three years at Borussia Dortmund (2014-2017), Ginter joined Gladbach in summer 2017 where he has gone on to make 178 competitive appearances and scored eleven goals. In the Bundesliga, the 28-year-old has made 153 total appearances (11 goals) for the club. In addition to that, Ginter has appeared 13 times in the DFB-Pokal, eight times in the UEFA Champions League and four times in the Europa League. Borussia wish Matthias the best of luck for his footballing future!
