Dr. Stefan Stegemann elected to Borussia’s supervisory board, Markus Aretz moves up to executive board

The board of directors at Borussia Mönchengladbach has elected Dr. Stefan Stegemann as the Vice-President of the Club’s supervisory board, at the recommendation of president Rolf Königs. The executive shareholders’ committee and supervisory board of the Club has also taken the decision to appoint Markus Aretz as an additional director.

At the recommendation of president Rolf Königs, the board of directors has voted Dr. Stefan Stegemann in as the new Vice-President of the Club’s supervisory board. Dr. Stegemann, aged 58, is the chairman of the board at Sonepar Deutschland GmbH, as well as president of Sonepar’s central- and northern Europe regions. Sonepar Deutschland have been a sponsoring partner of Borussia since 2012, and Dr. Stegemann has been a club member since March 1st 2012. Alongside club president Rolf Königs, the supervisory board also includes club vice-president Rainer Bonhof, as well as board member Hans Meyer.

The executive shareholders’ committee and supervisory board of Borussia Mönchengladbach GmbH have also taken the decision to appoint Markus Aretz as an additional director. Aretz, aged 55, has been at Borussia since 1999, initially as press spokesman and head of the media department, and has been director of corporate communications since 2016.

Aretz’s current role will be taken over, with immediate effect, by press spokespersons Michael Lessenich and Lübbo Popken (both aged 43), who have both been at Borussia Mönchengladbach since 2008.

“These decisions on personnel have seen us make some necessary new appointments in the club’s leadership, and are broadening the club’s horizons,” said president Rolf Königs. “We’re very happy that a long-term partner and friend of the club in Dr. Stefan Stegemann has been able to win a role in the supervisory board, and that we are able to bring a senior member of the club, who has significant experience in the important area of communications in football, into the executive board of the club in the form of Markus Aretz.”

Borussia reports second-highest turnover for 2023

During the annual general meeting for club members on Monday, 22nd March, Borussia chief executive Stephan Schippers gave his financial report for 2023. The club’s approximately €199.8 million of turnover is around €22 million more than last year.
