Borussia extend with goalkeeper Moritz Nicolas

Borussia Mönchengladbach have extended the contract of goalkeeper Moritz Nicolas, which was originally due to expire on 30th June 2023. The 24-year-old will now be with The Foals until 30th June 2026.

“We are very pleased with Moritz’s development,” said sporting director Roland Virkus. The goalkeeper spent the 2021/22 season out on loan at Viktoria Köln and he made 30 appearances in the league for the third division side. “Of course, we have closely monitored his performances. Moritz regularly performed at a high level last season and he has made great progress. We are convinced that he can establish himself at Gladbach. Another loan spell would be ideal in order to further his development and he will be able to contribute to another club and gain more competitive experience,” expanded Virkus.

Nicolas made the move to Mönchengladbach from Rot-Weiss Essen back in 2015. He played 75 times for the Gladbach U23s in the Regionaliga and was named in the first team squad on five occasions. Since then, he has had loan spells at three different clubs: Union Berlin (2019/20), VfL Osnabrück (2020/21) and Viktoria Köln (2021/22).

“I am incredibly happy at this club and I am delighted that I will continue to be a part of the Borussia family. Everything is going well from my perspective and I have had good talks with those in charge,” said Nicolas. “It was incredibly important to get some playing time last season, particularly after two loan spells that didn’t quite work out how I had imagined. Next season will also be about picking up more competitive experience. So in that sense, another loan spell is what we’re looking for.”

Borussia have extended goalkeeper Moritz Nicolas' contract by three years until June 2026.
