A sense of achievement for Borges Sanches, relegation for Lainer

While Yvandro Borges Sanches on duty with the Luxembourg national side finished the UEFA Nations League with a sense of achievement, Stefan Lainer and his Austrian teammates had to face relegation from League A.

Borges features in the starting eleven

Yvandro Borges Sanches had a successful close to the current round of UEFA Nations League fixtures with the Luxembourg national team. In the finals group game of League C, the hosts defeated Lithuania 1-0. Borussia’s attacker was, again, part of the starting eleven for his 14th international cap and came off only shortly before the final whistle blew. The goal was scored shortly before the change by Gerson Rodrigues (88’). The final standings saw Luxembourg finish in second place with eleven points, just behind Turkey with 13. Two further friendlies await Luxembourg in the middle of November: on the 17th against Hungary and on the 20th against Bulgaria.

Lainer suffers relegation

Stefan Lainer and the Austria national team have been relegated from the top tier of the UEFA Nations League. Austria suffered a 3-1 defeat to Croatia and, with it, concluded the group stage with four points from their six games, finishing in last position. Lainer came on in the 62nd minute – at this point in the game, the score was 1-1 after goals from Luka Modric (6’) and Christoph Baumgartner (9’). In the end, Marko Livaja (69’) and Dejan Lovren (72’) sealed the victory for the guests. Austria now face Andorra in Malaga in another friendly on the 16th November, before facing Italy in Vienna only four days later.
