USMNT and Joe Scally open World Cup campaign with 1-1 draw vs. Wales

The United States had to settle for a point in their opening group stage game at the World Cup on Monday evening, after a 1-1 draw with Wales. Joe Scally did not feature.

Right-back Joe Scally made his debut for the senior US side in June, and is taking part in his first World Cup with the side. Head coach Gregg Berhalter’s team came up against Gareth Bale and Wales in their opening group stage match.

Borussia’s statement on the 2022 World Cup

The USMNT dominated possession in the opening minutes, but weren’t able to create many chances for themselves. Wales began to push forward after 30 minutes, giving the US an opportunity to hit them on the counter-attack. Christian Pulisic played a through ball to Timothy Weah, who slotted it into the back of the net to give the Americans the lead. Bale was able to equalise late in the second half after winning a penalty and converting it himself, as the match ended in a 1-1 draw.

Scally, who has started all 15 Bundesliga games for Borussia this season, was an unused substitute. The USMNT will be back in action on Friday, 25th November (20:00 CET) as they face England. Gareth Southgate’s side won 6-2 against Iran in their World Cup opener.
