Joe Scally extends his contract until 2027

Borussia have agreed to extend Joe Scally’s contract by a further year. The 20-year-old’s deal was due to expire in 2026 before he agreed new terms on Thursday.

“Joe has developed really well with us. He quickly made the transition from being a talented youngster in our U23s to a regular for the first team, and even made the US World Cup squad. This is a great example of the journey we want our promising youngsters signed from other clubs to take,” said sporting director Roland Virkus. “This contract extension acknowledges his development, which we want to continue supporting in the future.”

The American moved to Mönchengladbach in January 2021 and played 15 times for Borussia’s U23s in the fourth division. Scally’s Bundesliga debut came at home to FC Bayern on 13th August 2021 in a 1-1 draw. His first top-flight goal – and only to date – was in that same season during a 3-1 away win against VfL Wolfsburg. So far, Scally has played 56 times in the Bundesliga (1 goal) and five games in the DFB-Pokal (1 goal). The defender was called up to the US national team for the first time in November 2021 and won his first cap on 2nd June 2022 against Morocco. He has played four times for his country at the time of writing.

“The most important thing for me is to be playing regularly. Borussia give me the chance to do that and help my development as a player,” explained Scally. “The club presented me with a clear plan regarding my future during our conversations. I’m pleased to be staying at Borussia.”

Joe Scally's contract will now run until 2027.
