Player of the season nominees: Marcus Thuram

Marcus Thuram has been nominated for Borussia’s Player of the Season for 2022/23, presented by Cichon Personalmanagement, as well as Jonas Hofmann, Lars Stindl and Ko Itakura. Here is a closer look at Marcus Thuram’s season.

Marcus Thuram is one of the four nominees for Player of the Season 2022/23, alongside Jonas Hofmann, Ko Itakura and Lars Stindl. The France international stood out above all in October for his performances and was named the Player of the Month. Thuram scored in four consecutive Bundesliga games, with one against Köln, Bremen and Frankfurt, and a brace against Wolfsburg. Thuram wasn’t only prolific in October, however, and the 25-year-old showed his hunger to score goals over the whole season. In 30 appearances, “Tikus” had 89 shots, with only one other player recording more (Marvin Ducksch, 93).

Time and again, the Frenchman proved his strength in dribbling and holding the ball up and therefore set up many of his own goals and chances himself. Borussia’s top scorer for the past Bundesliga season netted 13 goals, putting him in sixth place on the overall rankings in the league. A closer look at the statistics shows that he is versatile when shooting and therefore difficult to defend against, since Thuram scored six times each with his left and right foot and once with his head. “Tikus” also stood out for providing goals, setting up six goals for his teammates, which was the fourth best figure in the league. In the DFB-Pokal, Thuram scored three more goals and recorded an assist.

At the World Cup in Qatar last year, Thuram also reached the final with the France national team, and it was a hard-fought match in the final against Argentina. The Borussia player came on in the 41st minute of the final and brought some new energy to France’s game, since they were already 2-0 down at that point. It was Thuram who set up Kylien Mbappé with a one-two to equalise. This saved France and took the game into extra time, but they ultimately lost the game in a penalty shoot-out. With his assist in the World Cup final, Thuram became the second Gladbach player, after Rainer Bonhof, to record a goal or assist in a World Cup final.

Marcus Thuram stands alongside Jonas Hofmann, Ko Itakura and Lars Stindl in the vote for Borussia’s Player of the Season. Voting closes on Monday 12th June (23:59 CEST) on the FohlenApp.
