Lars Stindl voted Borussia's Player of the Season 2022/23

Borussia fans have selected Lars Stindl as their Player of the Season 2022/23! The departing captain came out on top of the FohlenApp vote, presented by Cichon Personalmanagement, finishing above Jonas Hofmann, Ko Itakura and Marcus Thuram.

The voting for Borussia’s Player of the Season 2022/23, presented by Cichon Personalmanagement, has ended with a clear winner. Lars Stindl received 75.93% of the vote, with the 34-year-old taking home the award for the third time after 2017 and 2021. Jonas Hofmann finished in second (20.27%), followed by Ko Itakura (2.88%) and Marcus Thuram (0.92%).

Stindl scored the equaliser in Borussia’s 2-2 draw against Leverkusen on the penultimate matchday of the season, joining the fans in the stands to celebrate afterwards. It would be his final competitive goal for the Foals.

Three-time Player of the Month winner

The captain, who will leave the club after eight years this summer, has been in strong form all season. Stindl was named Player of the Month in both January and February and ended the season on a hot streak. The 34-year-old was involved in a goal in each of the last four matches of the season, scoring once against Bochum (2-0), Dortmund (5-2 loss) and Leverkusen (2-2) and providing an assist on the final day against Augsburg (2-0). He was named Player of the Month in May as a result.

The midfielder featured in 31 games across all competitions in 2022/23 (29 in the Bundesliga, 2 in the DFB-Pokal), and had a hand in 19 goals in this period (9 goals, 10 assists). Four of his seven league goals this term came from off the bench.

The end of an era

Stindl joined the Foals in summer 2015 from Hannover 96, and went on to score 83 goals and provide 62 assists in 271 competitive matches for Borussia. He has captained the side since the 2016/17 season and has been a key player over the last years. Fans will have fond memories of his unforgettable hat-trick in the round of 32 of the Europa League against Fiorentina on 23rd February 2017 (4-2). Other memorable performances from his Borussia career include his three goal involvements in a 4-2 win against Sevilla in the Champions League on 25th November 2015, his winning goal in the derby against Köln on 8th April 2017 (3-2) or his hat-trick in a 3-3 draw against Frankfurt on 15th December 2020.

Stindl’s departure marks the end of an era at the club. After eight years in Mönchengladbach, the midfielder is returning to his boyhood club Karlsruher SC. Our number 13 will leave with fond memories of his time with the Foals, saying “My time at Borussia was the best time of my life, and I will never forget this club. I’m incredibly grateful for all the incredible people that I was able to meet at the club and in the city over the last eight years, as well as all the Borussia fans.”
