European Championships qualifiers: Borges Sanches with a goal and an assist in victory against Iceland

Two Borussia players took part in qualification games for the 2024 European Championships, which will be held in Germany, yesterday evening. Yvandro Borges Sanches celebrated a win with Luxembourg against Iceland, whilst Grant-Leon Ranos’ Armenia drew against Turkey.

Luxembourg

Yvandro Borges Sanches (photo: imago images/Majerus) played in Luxembourg’s 3-1 win in his 21st appearance for the senior national team. After Maxime Chanot put the hosts ahead from the penalty spot in the first half (9’), the Borussia attacker scored the goal to put his side 2-0 up after the break (70’). Iceland, who went down to ten men late on after having a man sent off for two yellow card offences, scored late on to get back in the game (88’). However, Daniel Sinani then wrapped the game up just a minute later after receiving a pass from Borges Sanches. Borussia’s U19 goalkeeper Tiago Pereira Cardoso watched the whole game from the bench. Luxembourg are in third place with ten points from five games in qualification group J, only behind Portugal (15 points) and level on points with Slovakia (10).

Armenia

The Armenia national team drew 1-1 in their EURO qualifier yesterday against Turkey. Borussia striker Grant-Leon Ranos started the game and helped his team maintain a one-nil lead that the took in the first half through Artak Dashyan’s goal (49’) until the closing stages where they conceded a late equaliser (88’). Ranos was already off the pitch at that point, with the 20-year-old substituted in the 62nd minute. Armenia are currently in third place in qualification group D with seven points after four games – Turkey are currently in the lead, tallying ten points from five matches, closely followed by Croatia, who have seven points after three matches.

Borussia and Frankfurt share the points in a hard-fought encounter

On Matchday 33 of the Bundesliga, Borussia drew 1-1 with Eintracht Frankfurt in their final home game of the season. Eric Dina Ebimbe cancelled out Robin Hack’s early opener.

At the final Bundesliga home game of the season against Eintracht Frankfurt, Borussia officially said farewell to Tony Jantschke and Patrick Herrmann, who will both retire from playing at the end of the season.
