Borussia reports second-highest turnover for 2023

During the annual general meeting for club members on Monday, 22nd March, Borussia chief executive Stephan Schippers gave his financial report for 2023. The club’s approximately €199.8 million of turnover is around €22 million more than last year.

Borussia VfL 1900 Mönchengladbach GmbH recorded around €199.8 million of income for 2023 and ended the financial year (1st January to 31st December 2023) with a €10.1 million profit before tax according to the club’s annual financial statement, which has been approved by an auditor. It is the second-highest turnover in the club’s history after 2019 (€213.1m). “Following three years with enormous losses of revenue caused by the pandemic and its consequences, we’re delighted to be able to report a significant profit again for 2023. Our income in all key areas has increased,” said chief executive Stephan Schippers. “We ended the 2022/23 with a new attendance record, so a huge thanks has to go to our fans. We also made gains in sponsorship, which was a vital aspect behind the stabilisation of our finances.”

The almost three-year long pandemic led to Borussia’s equity sinking from €103.3 million to €47.1 million. That figure was increased by €4.2 million in 2023 and is now approximately €51.4 million. “That gives us the second-highest capital of all independent Bundesliga clubs without any investors or shareholders,” highlighted Schippers.

All in all, Borussia has come out the other side of Covid in good stead. “It was a tricky three years. Our assets took a hit. We had to put the brakes on during that time to offset our losses. Now we’re back on course, but we still need to continue that recovery process,” said Schippers. “The goal for the next years also has to be to record positive numbers. We want to invest every Euro that we earn into sport, but we will only spend money that we actually make,” added Schippers.

The club’s registered association (e.V.) closed the 2023 financial year with a small profit of around €51 before tax.
