Ginter scores in Germany’s 2-1 win in Kiev

Matthias Ginter put Germany 1-0 up in their 2-1 UEFA Nations League win over Ukraine. Yann Sommer and Nico Elvedi lost 1-0 with Switzerland away to Spain.

Germany

After Florian Neuhaus scored in the 3-3 draw against Turkey, Matthias Ginter also got on the scoresheet for Germany during this international break. The centre back put his national team ahead after some good work by Antonio Rüdiger in Kiev. “I have to admit that 90% of that goal belongs to Antonio Rüdiger, who set it up brilliantly. I always to try improve myself and it’s nice to be rewarded with a goal.” Leon Goretzka capitalised on an error from the Ukraine keeper to make it 2-0, before Ruslan Malinovskyi scored a penalty for the hosts. Nevertheless, Germany held on for the win – their first ever victory in the UEFA Nations League. “We are pleased that we won, because only wins can help us progress. We also know that we weren’t at our best though. It was a bit tight after we conceded. It wasn’t our best performance overall.” The other two Foals in the squad, Florian Neuhaus and Jonas Hofmann, didn’t come off the bench in Ukraine. Germany are currently second in Group 4 of League A, having already drawn to Spain and Switzerland.

Switzerland

Yann Sommer and Nico Elvedi were also in Nations League action, as they lost 1-0 away to Spain. Mikel Oyarzabal scored the only goal of the game in the 14th minute for the hosts. Switzerland are now bottom of the group, with just one point to their name after Yann Sommer & Co. drew against Germany 1-1 back in September. Their next game comes against Neuhaus, Hofmann and Ginter on Tuesday night (20:45 CEST).
