#WOBBMG: Match reaction

After the Foals’ 3-1 win over VfL Wolfsburg, we have the reactions of Max Wöber, Rocco Reitz, Julian Weigl and the two head coaches Gerardo Seoane and Ralph Hasenhüttl.

Max Wöber: We’ve had to deal with a lot of disappointment over the past few weeks. That makes this victory especially sweet. In the first half, we didn’t concede a lot of chances other than the early goal. Wolfsburg tried to use their pace to get in behind and caused us problems now and then. However, we were the more dangerous side and created more attacking situations than them. In the second half, we counter-attacked even better and created a lot of chances with our quick players. We were eventually rewarded for our good performance with the three goals. Our aim was to get our amazing fans back on board. That only happens through winning, and this was a great first step.

Rocco Reitz: We’re incredibly happy that we’ve been rewarded for the effort we put in, and that we’ve also finally picked up three points on the road again. We did really well off the ball and conceded fewer chances. We of course had a bit of luck with Ko Itakura’s equaliser, but you sometimes need that. That goal kind of opened the floodgates for us. This win was definitely for our fans in the stands. The victory is good for us, but even more so for them. We’re incredibly pleased about that.

Julian Weigl: I think we played well. We defended with determination and countered well at the right moments. The first half wasn’t bad. Unfortunately, we conceded an early goal, but we didn’t let that deter us. We kept on playing our game, even though we maybe hadn’t created enough going forward before half time. In the second half, we stepped it up another level. We started really well and turned the game around in a short period of time. In the final phases, Wolfsburg did admittedly pile on the pressure again, but we didn’t allow them any chances apart from one header.

Head coach Gerardo Seoane: I’m very happy for my team, because they gave everything and really deserved the win. We chose a different approach and had more players behind the ball. That worked. Even after going behind early, we remained patient and stayed compact. We put in a lot of effort in the first half, but we were just missing the final finish. We started the second half really well, counter-attacked nicely and created a lot of clear-cut chances. After going 2-1 up, we continued to counter well and had some good phases of possession. This win is a very important step in terms of the table, and it also gives us confidence and newfound energy.

Head coach Ralph Hasenhüttl (VfL Wolfsburg): In the second half, we were missing everything that we did well in the first half. We started the match well and put into practice a lot of the things we’d planned. After the equaliser, you could tell that the team wasn’t as solid and stable. We were inviting Gladbach to shoot. We also weren’t as good in individual battles, because we couldn’t keep up the high intensity from the first half. We have to be critical of ourselves and recognise that our performance in the second half wasn’t good enough.
