“A draw is a fair result” - Freiburg match reaction

We gathered the thoughts of the players and coaches after Borussia’s 2-2 in Freiburg on Saturday.

Breel Embolo: We don’t have the best record here in Freiburg, unfortunately, so we knew that it was going to be a tough game. We didn’t start too badly, but we allowed them to have too many chances in the first half. If we had gone behind in the first 45, I don’t think we could have complained. We showed some real quality for our opening goal. We moved the ball quickly, just like we set out to do. Freiburg continued to play well though and we ended up conceding an avoidable goal from a set piece. We had a good second half – the penalty was our only real blip, but we responded to it well We had chances to make it 3-2, sadly they went begging, but ultimately I think a draw is a fair result.

Florian Neuhaus: It was no doubt a good one for the neutral, but I would have preferred a more boring game that we ended up winning 1-0. We were determined to get the three points, but we didn’t quite manage it, so we’ll have to settle for one. We didn’t start the game all that well, but we battled hard and fought our way into the match. We were playing some really nice football by the end and had a few good chances to get the win. Freiburg had some decent opportunities too, so I think you have to say a draw is fair.

Marco Rose: We know how hard it is here in Freiburg and I think that the lads really gave their all in what were difficult circumstances. We didn’t make the best of starts, but we grew into the game. It was a bit chaotic at the end as both teams were pushing for the three points. We both had good chances and could have won it. We will take a point and now we want to take our energy from today into Wednesday’s game in Madrid.

Freiburg head coach Christian Streich: We were more than a match for a very good Gladbach team. We created a number of really good chances, so it’s a shame that we couldn’t turn them into three points. It was still a very good performance though. We continued to press hard throughout the game and were superb from a tactical standpoint too. Unfortunately, we were only able to reward ourselves with a point. We alost ended up losing it in stoppage time, which would have been very unfair.
