“The result hurts” - Leverkusen match reaction

We gathered the thoughts from both camps after Borussia’s 1-0 loss to Bayer 04 Leverkusen on Saturday afternoon.

Hannes Wolf: Leverkusen were the better team in the first half and we struggled to get a foothold in the game. We were much better after the break. We’re struggling to just relax and let our instincts take over at the moment. We’re not enjoying our football as much because the results aren’t there. Nevertheless, I feel that we’re on course to turn it around, and we didn’t play badly today again. We’re playing alright, but the last few percent is what’s missing at the moment.  We will keep at it, even if things aren’t going well right now. The results will return at some point.

Marco Rose: Like on Tuesday in the cup against Dortmund, it’s not a game that we necessarily should be losing but we’ve ended up being beaten 1-0. We didn’t really get stuck into the challenges enough. You can start to overthink things in a situation like this, but I thought we certainly turned up. Our biggest challenge now is getting the boys to play instinctively again and show belief. It’s my job as the coach to make that happen. There were a number of moments during the game where it could have swung in our favour, yet we still weren’t able to get a positive result, and that hurts. Now it’s about dusting ourselves off and going again on Friday.

Max Eberl: It’s a difficult day and the result hurts. Just like in the cup game, both teams were on a level playing field and a draw would probably have been a fair result. We’re simply not able to keep a clean sheet at the moment and are struggling to score at the other end, although we had three or four good chances today. There’s a lot going against us right now. When you’re winning, things often just work out by themselves. We’re on a negative run right now and that makes everything all the more complicated. You try even harder to implement the things that the coach asks of you to avoid making any mistakes, and then it can become a little strained and you overthink things. We can’t bury our head in the sand though – we need to head to Augsburg and try again to get a win.

Bayer Leverkusen head coach Peter Bosz: I’m very happy with the three points – that’s the most important thing when you’re on a run like we are. I was really pleased with how we tried to get forward in the first half; we played with a lot of courage. We lost our thread a little after the break because Gladbach pushed forward more, pressed more and played well. But we worked incredibly hard and ended up getting the win, which is very pleasing. Both sides have had a difficult period, but we never played with fear or looked like a team that wasn’t assured of itself.
