Sommer: "A lucky draw for us"

Yann Sommer spoke to the press following Borussia’s 1-1 draw against FSV Mainz 05. Hear from our No. 1 about…

…the performance in Mainz: We allowed Mainz to control the game more in the second half. That allowed them to create more chances on goal and to control possession. Ramy Bensebaini had a good opportunity to add a second goal in the first half. If his header had gone in, then the game might have looked a bit different. In the end, it’s a lucky draw for us.

…if there are any positives to take from the game: Definitely. In the past, we've had similar games that we’ve then gone on to lose. The fact that we took home a point is a good thing. Not everything went to plan during the match, but we were especially energetic during the first half and got stuck in our tackles, against a team that are very strong at home. Those are all positives for me.

…how he thinks the season has been so far: A win against Mainz would definitely have helped us in the table. But, over the last weeks the coach’s influence on our game has become more apparant. We are most resistant to setbacks, are very energetic and aggressive in our counter-press. Now, we just need to get it on a consistent level. That will be important in order for us to have a successful season.

…his goals for the rest of the season: A successful season in my eyes means that we will be playing in Europe again next year. Things are still quite close in the table, and we’re only a few games in. It will be important that we take as many points as possible from our next games. Then we’ll see where we end up. It definitely won’t be a walk in the park.

Yann Sommer impressed as one of the best players on the pitch against Mainz.
