Hofmann: "We defended terribly"

Jonas Hofmann answered the media’s questions after the heavy 6-0 defeat to SC Freiburg. The 29-year-old discussed the run of the game and the four goals conceded from set pieces.

Jonas Hofmann on…

… his feelings after the game: The defeat hurts. The loss in Cologne was also painful. But whoever thought things couldn’t get any worse after the derby last week has now been proven wrong.

… the run of the game: I’ve never experienced a game like that before. We were still in the dressing room for probably the first 25 minutes. Of course, you can always concede an early goal and go behind, but that’s not at all what happened yesterday. 5-0 down after 25 minutes is ridiculous. The game was over relatively quickly. At least after the fourth goal, and definitely at 5-0.

… goals conceded from set pieces: It’s unbelievable that we conceded four goals from dead balls. Everything went against us there. We were too naïve defending the det pieces and weren’t aggressive. The opposition could put the ball in the back of the net almost completely unpressured. We defended terribly.

… discussions at half time: Of course, a few things were said to begin with. After that, we definitely couldn’t allow them to reach double figures – that would have made things even more horrid than they already were. Even for the coach it was hard to find words.

… moving on from the result: We will feel the consequences of it this week in training – and that’s how it should be. 10 goals conceded in two games is way too much. Despite that, we have to try and put the losses to Köln and Freiburg behind us as quickly as possible. In this situation, that’s the best thing you can do. Even if it sounds silly, we have to try and now allow ourselves to focus too much on these two results. Even though we will analyse the 6-0 defeat with our coaches, there’s no way of changing it now. Next weekend we have to go again. We have to have a clear mind and have moved on from the previous two games.
