Foals beaten 2-1 at home by Dortmund

The Foals were beaten 2-1 by Borussia Dortmund on Matchday 29 of the Bundesliga.

After an even start to the game in front of 54,042 spectators at a sold-out BORUSSIA-PARK, the visitors took the lead in the 22nd minute through Marcel Sabitzer. Just five minutes later, the same player made it 2-0 to BVB from the penalty spot. The Foals didn’t let this deter them and hit back through Max Wöber in the 36th minute. Just after half time in the 55th, Dortmund were reduced to ten men after Karim Adeyemi was shown a second yellow card. With a man advantage, the Foals fought tirelessly but were unable to create enough clear-cut chances, and the game ended 2-1.

TEAM NEWS

Head coach Gerardo Seoane named the same starting eleven as in the 3-1 away win over Wolfsburg last time out. Stefan Lainer, Marvin Friedrich, Max Wöber and Luca Netz made up the defence in front of goalkeeper Jonas Omlin. Julian Weigl and Ko Itakura started in central midfield, while Nathan Ngoumou, Franck Honorat and Alassane Plea formed the attack.

Manu Koné (thigh strain), Grant-Leon Ranos (ankle injury), Tony Jantschke (adductor problems) and Christoph Kramer (illness) were unavailable for Borussia.

FIRST HALF HIGHLIGHTS

11’: The first good attack from the Foals. Plea shoots from the edge of the penalty area, but it’s straight at Kobel in the BVB goal.

22’: BVB take the lead. The unmarked Sabitzer gets on the end of a long ball from Schlotterbeck on the left of the penalty area, and hammers the ball past the goalkeeper for 1-0.

28’: The visitors net a second in quick succession. Ngoumou brings down Schlotterbeck on the left of the penalty area, and Sabitzer slots the resulting spot kick into the bottom right corner to make it 2-0.

36’: The Foals hit back! Honorat delivers a corner perfectly onto Wöber, who powerfully heads into the bottom corner and it’s 2-1.

39’: Plea sets Honorat away on the left. The Frenchman speeds through to the touchline, but can’t beat Kobel from a tight angle.

SECOND HALF HIGHLIGHTS

51’: Sabitzer looks to have put BVB 3-1 ahead after converting another penalty, but with the ball already in the back of the net, referee Badstübner is sent to the VAR screen and overturns the spot kick.

55’: Adeyemi fouls Lainer and is shown a second yellow card. Honorat’s resulting free-kick is just missed by Wöber in the middle.

90+1: Two big chances for the Foals. Firstly, Čvančara’s effort is saved by Kobel, before Plea’s follow-up is blocked almost on the line by Schlotterbeck.

90+2’: So nearly the equaliser! Čvančara heads Honorat’s cross just over the bar.
