Voting open for Borussia’s Player of the Month for April

Yann Sommer, Alassane Plea, Lars Stindl and Breel Embolo have all been nominated for Borussia’s Player of the Month award for April, presented by Cichon Personalmanagement. You can vote for your favourite in the FohlenApp right now.

Who’s been Borussia’s best player in April? Yann Sommer, Alassane Plea, Lars Stindl or Breel Embolo – the choice is yours! The Foals played four league matches this month, starting off with a 1-1 draw against Mainz before winning 2-0 away to Fürth. We then suffered a bitter 3-1 derby defeat at home to Köln, and recently drew 3-3 away at SC Freiburg.

Sommer, Plea and Stindl all picked up “Player of the Match” awards during the month, which automatically puts them in contention for the “Player of the Month” award, presented by Cichon Personalmanagement. Embolo’s good performances this month mean he has also been nominated for the award.

Yann Sommer continued in impressive form once again in April, in particular against Mainz at the start of the month. The 33-year-old made several top-class saves to keep out the Zerofivers. Three minutes after half-time, Jonny Burkardt had a huge chance to equalise, but Sommer stretched out a hand at the very last second and tipped the goal-bound shot over the bar. He went on to make two top-quality stops within a few seconds right at the very end of the game, first from another Burkardt effort and then to prevent Jae-Sung Lee from heading in a potential winner. His performance was well recognised by our fans, with the Swiss international receiving 89% of the votes for “Player of the Match” from this game.

Alassane Plea was also in marvellous form this month. He set up Marcus Thuram’s opener in Fürth with a brilliant pass before coolly converting his penalty to double the Foals’ advantage. It was no surprise that the 29-year-old picked up the “Player of the Match” award for the victory over Greuther, collecting 39% of the votes on the FohlenApp. Plea currently has the most Bundesliga goal involvements in the squad this season (eight goals, six assists).

Lars Stindl made his comeback after two months on the sidelines in March, and step-by-step he’s got himself back in form and back into the team. He started against Mainz and came off the bench in all of our other matches in April. He was brought on in the 73rd minute against Freiburg after Alassane Plea was forced to come off after picking up a knock, and Stindl rescued a point for the Foals with his header in second-half injury time. “With every passing second, you could tell this game wanted to turn on its head once again. I’m really glad that he got his goal,” commented head coach Adi Hütter. Stindl received 51% of the “Player of the Match” votes from the game in Breisgau.

Breel Embolo scored three of his seven league goals so far this season in April, only failing to score in the 2-0 win in Fürth. He gave us the lead against Mainz after some nice build-up play from Florian Neuhaus (33’), and he got us one back against Köln after a long ball from Jonas Hofmann (84’). Embolo also put us 2-0 up against Freiburg last weekend with a tidy finish past Mark Flekken into the near corner (13’), and now needs just one more goal to level his goal record for a single Bundesliga season, which he achieved in 2019/20 (eight goals).

Fans can vote for their choice immediately in the FohlenApp. Voting closes on Thursday at 23:59 CEST.
