Herrmann: “Borussia is and will always be my club”

Patrick Herrmann remains a Foal! In an interview, the 31-year-old spoke about his contract extension, his time at Borussia so far, and his goals for the future.

Congratulations on your contract extension, Patrick. How are you feeling after signing your new deal?

Patrick Herrmann: Everything took a little bit longer due to Max Eberl’s departure, as I had been talking to him about it, but Steffen Korell and Roland Virkus carried those discussions on. I’m over the moon to be able to stay at what is, for me, the best club in the world, for another two years, and I’m looking forward to getting next season underway.

You’ve been here at Borussia since 2008 and have experienced a lot in your time so far. Is it possible for you to shorten those 14 years into a summary?

Herrmann: At the start, when I stepped up to the first team, we were a bit lower down the league and had to fight through the relegation playoff to stay in the Bundesliga. Since then, though, we’ve almost always been on the up, playing some great games and having some memorable trips in the Champions League and Europa League. There are some nights that I’ll never forget, like our game away to Fiorentina. Those are moments which stay long in the memory, and there are still more memories to create!

It’s become less and less common nowadays for a player to spend so long at a single club. What does being part of the Borussia family mean to you?

Herrmann: It’s a crucial factor for me. The main thing in life is that you have to feel happy and at home, which is definitely the case with me here at Borussia. I’m so proud to have been here for so many years and to have played during a time when we’ve had so many happy memories. Who knows what will happen in the next two years!

What are your goals for the next two years?

Herrmann: My first aim is to keep working in the same way as I am currently. I’m giving my all in every training session, and whenever I get on the pitch I try to give everything I have. I’ll always do that, until the very last day I play for Borussia Mönchengladbach – it’s the most important thing for me; we’ll have to wait and see with everything else. I hope that we can share some more wonderful years together.

When this contract ends in 2024, you will be 33 years old. Can you see yourself finishing your career here at Borussia?

Herrmann: That’s a pretty big thing for me, to be honest. I think it’s fantastic that I’ve been able to play for just a single club in my career, especially one as big as Borussia. I want to give my all here for two more years and then see what comes after. In any case, Mönchengladbach feels like home to me now and we’re going to move into a new house here soon. Borussia is and will always be my club – I would probably be lacing my boots up to play at BORUSSIA-PARK aged 60 if I could!
