Itakura: “I’m looking forward to playing in front of the fans”

Shortly after taking part in his first training session as a Gladbach player, Ko Itakura spoke to the media at a press conference in Tegernsee. Here are the most important statements:

…signing for VfL: Borussia really wanted to sign me and that was the most important thing with regards to the transfer. It was an easy decision for me to join.

…his first impressions: Of course I need time to get to know things, from my teammates to everything to do with the club. I have already seen that we have a great group. I have already spoken to some of the players and the first training session was good. Lots of fans were in attendance and I am really looking forward to playing in front of them in the stadium.

…his experience of playing in Europe: I have already played in Europe for three and a half years; for Groningen and for Schalke. When I first came I didn’t speak a word of English, but now I can speak it fairly well. I can communicate with my teammates, but now I want to learn German.

…his playing positions: I can play as a central defender and as a number six. I have played in both positions in the past. I have played as a centre-back for longer, so maybe that position is a bit easier for me, but I also like playing as a six, so I can’t say which I prefer. I just want to play as much as possible and I think I can help the team in both positions.

…coach Daniel Farke: He loves football and I do too. I now need to get to grips with what he wants from us. I think after the training camp I will be more integrated.

…the game against Schalke on Matchday 2: I enjoyed my time with Schalke but now I am at Borussia. I am looking forward to the game and I want to win.

…Japanese players at Gladbach: I know of Yuki Otsu but I haven’t spoken to him yet. I know I am the second Japanese player to play for Gladbach after him.

…football in Japan: I think football in Japan is more technical. Football in Germany is much faster and more physical than in Japan. That is the biggest difference in my opinion.

…the World Cup match between Japan and Germany: I am really looking forward to the game. Lots of people are saying that Japan don’t stand a chance but we believe we do and we are excited for it.
