"We’re really disappointed" - #BOCBMG match reaction

We gathered the thoughts of the players and coaches following Borussia’s 2-1 defeat against VfL Bochum on Tuesday night.

Jan Olschowsky: Unfortunately we started the game really badly, but I think we showed a good reaction in the second half. But it wasn’t enough in the end. We’re really disappointed with the defeat at the moment; you want to win whenever you play. With a bit of time to reflect, I’ll look back fondly on the game because it was my debut. It was a really tough task here in a stadium with a good atmosphere. 

Christoph Kramer: We didn’t have any courage and didn’t stick to our plan. The little things were decisive. Playing here in Bochum under the floodlights is always intense. We want to be brave in our play and create spaces as a result of that, but we didn’t manage to do so. If you try to have a lot of possession but you’re not brave with the ball, you make it hard for yourself and that’s how we went behind quickly. The disallowed goal was a legitimate goal in my opinion, even when I’m being impartial. There’s no doubt about it. The defeat doesn’t throw us off and our next task is getting a win on Friday.

Jonas Hofmann: We have to hold ourselves accountable that we were not awake for the first 12 minutes. We didn't carry out any of what we wanted and that meant that we ended up playing a lot of long balls, which wasn't what we set out to do. Bochum defended them well. I think the Bochum defender is able to get a foot in properly for our disallowed goal, but he doesn't make proper contact and it goes out wide. To say that it was an uncontrolled action on the ball seems unreasonable to me.

Daniel Farke: I don’t think there’s much to elaborate on in terms of how the game developed. Bochum deserved to be 2-0 ahead at half time. They did exactly what they have been trying to do in their recent home games – they played with intensity and aggression and ran a lot. We weren’t courageous enough, we didn’t run enough and we didn’t think fast enough. We didn’t create anything in our build-up play and ended up playing too many long balls. I owe the team a compliment for their reaction in the second half, though. We invested a lot more after half time and were braver. We then scored the deserved equaliser but unfortunately it was ruled out. I think 2-2 would have been a fair result.

VfL Bochum head coach Thomas Letsch: We started the game brilliantly and carried out what we were planning to do. We didn’t want to allow Gladbach into the game or let them demonstrate their quality and we managed to do that well. Our early lead was deserved. I was pleased with the way we began the second half, but then we made the mistake of letting them back into the game. We made too many wrong decisions and that can tip a game like this one. Despite that, we managed to see the win over the line, of course with a little bit of luck, but that’s part of football.
