Successful start to the World Cup for Sommer and Elvedi

Borussia players Yann Sommer and Nico Elvedi began their World Cup campaign with a 1-0 win over Cameroon in Group G.

Switzerland’s starting XI included Foals Yann Sommer and Nico Elvedi, as well as former Borussia players Granit Xhaka and Breel Embolo. The first half was a tight affair with few chances. A header from Elvedi that went over the bar was one of the best opportunities. At the other end, Yann Sommer was solid as usual in the Swiss goal.

Embolo gave Switzerland the lead at the start of the second half from a Xherdan Shaqiri cross (48’). Aside from an Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting shot, which Yann Sommer saved, Switzerland were compact at the back. Elvedi was booked in the 64th minute for a tactical foul on the Bayern striker, but otherwise impressed in defence. Switzerland failed to add further goals from counter-attacks, though they still held on for a 1-0 win. “We’re really pleased with our successful start to the tournament,” said Sommer after his first competitive game in a number of weeks. “I’ve worked hard to get fit in time for the World Cup after my ankle injury and thankfully that work paid off.”

Switzerland’s next game is on Monday at 17:00 CET against Brazil. The next Borussia player that could feature at the World Cup is Joe Scally tomorrow night for USA against England (20:00 CET).
