Hofmann comes off the bench as Germany draw 1-1

Jonas Hofmann and the Germany national team secured a 1-1 draw against Spain in their second World Cup group-stage game and therefore still have a chance of reaching the next round.

Like in the opening game against Japan, Jonas Hofmann began the game on the bench against Spain. Spain tried to dominate the possession and were met with an aggressive and intense German press. Despite chances for both sides, there were no goals in the first half.

Spain took the lead in the 63rd minute when Alvaro Morata finished a Jordi Alba cross at the front post. Head coach Hansi Flick reacted with a triple change that saw rewards immediately. Leroy Sané played in Jamal Musiala, whose touch was taken on by Niclas Füllkrug. The Werder Bremen forward powered a finish into the top corner to level the scores in the 83rd minute. Two minutes later, Hofmann replaced Serge Gnabry to record the second World Cup appearance of his career.

In order to reach the round of 16, Germany need a win against Costa Rica on Thursday and will be hoping that Japan and Ko Itakura are do not pick up three points against Spain.
